Blood flow restriction training, commonly called BFR or BFR therapy, is a technique that uses controlled pressure to temporarily reduce blood flow to your muscles during exercise. During a session, you can expect your FYZICAL therapist to:
- Place a specialized cuff, similar to a blood pressure cuff, on your arm or leg.
- Adjust the cuff to partially restrict blood flow using precise measurements and advanced technology.
- Monitor while you complete three sets of 15-30 reps with the cuffs inflated, for a maximum of 20 minutes.
The pressure cuffs create an anabolic environment and trigger your body to improve protein synthesis and muscle growth in a way that only usually happens during heavy lifting. Yet you can achieve this response while lifting weights that are lighter than what you’d normally need for strength training, making this an option even if you have joint pain or injuries.
The result?
You build strength faster, with less strain on your joints.
